This was considered an “average” scan, according to the game. The lighting in my living room is a bit uneven, and 2K recommends taking the photos in even, bright light to get the best possible scan. Still, it’s quite impressive. That is me, for better or for worse; the camera is a lot more honest than I would be with myself. And if I really wanted to, I could sculpt my features further to smooth out any irregularities. Again, here is a picture of me:

And here is an in-game screenshot of my avatar. This time, I’ve added in hairstyle, facial hair, eyebrows, and skin texture to give myself a more weathered, realistic look. It’s as close as I’ve ever managed to make an in-game avatar look like me.I STAND at a hair under 5 feet and nine inches tall with an unathletic body and no discernible basketball skills.

I’ve just begun the MyCareer mode in the most popular basketball video game series in the world, which sees you take your personal avatar from high school phenom to all-time NBA great — assuming you play well enough, of course.
The mode has been a stalwart of the series for years now, with last year’s version — called ‘Livin’ Da Dream’ — being a notable experiment as you took over a predefined character through a story written, produced and directed by Spike Lee.
Suffice it to say that this version of MyCareer was controversial. Controlling a player nicknamed ‘Freq’ was strange enough as it was but you also had to run through a story which involved a rapper named Bo$$-Key-Yacht$, a speech from your team’s owner about how his friend died in Las Vegas, getting cut in your rookie season despite being declared a future great of the NBA and a 15-minute speech from a ghost.
Although perhaps most importantly, you only got to play eight games in your rookie season.
This year you could say it’s back to basics for MyCareer but that’s hardly fair because of how it has used some of the elements of last year’s mode and expanded upon them to create a more fully-featured experience.
