If this all sounds stressful, it’s not, the story includes giving you an agent who takes care of most of this for you.

The problem with it, though, is that while I can see what it’s trying to do—show you all aspects of an NBA player’s life, not just the on-court action—it’s really dull. In a game where even playing actual NBA games gets tedious after a while (you’ll be simulating meaningless games before your rookie season is even done so you can skip to the more important match-ups), asking players to repeatedly click through a phone screen and watch some idling animations repeat themselves (you rarely get to actually see what happens at an off-court event) just to tick the calendar along is a waste of everyone’s time.

This is my guy for 2K17. Douglas Chan, aka Chandemonium (or, that WOULD have been his nickname if the game hadn’t forced me to adopt “Pres” instead).
On the court, there’s some good stuff here. While the visuals and feel of the game are barely-changed from 2K16—not that this is bad thing, since no other sports game is as good at nailing the physical contact and interactions between athletes—there’s a new feature where the off-court friendship between your character and Justice Young (Michael B Jordan’s guy) evolves into an on-court bonus mode.

Play well together and you’ll unlock ORANGE JUICE mode (yes, that’s its name, it’s what the two main characters call their partnership), a temporary boost where you get to control both characters instead of one, swapping between them at the push of a button like a very expensive recreation of NBA Jam.

It feels weird at first, but once you get the hang of it there are advantages to using it. Mostly because it lets you get more of the ball while in possession; my character Douglas Chan is a small forward and Justice is a guard, so I could control Justice while bringing the ball up then pass inside (or alley oop, which is super easy in this mode) to Chan for the score. The audio in the most recent installments of the NBA 2K series was something Visual Concepts and 2K Sports were "simply not satisfied with". In an attempt to improve it, a team from Visual Concepts travelled to every arena used by NBA teams to record audio for use in the game. One focus was how ball dribbling and arena sound effects sounded; as a result, each arena in the game features distinct arena sound effects and unique dribbling sounds.[9][30] Along with players" faces and bodies being scanned into the game like previous installments, shoes are now also scanned.[9]

NBA 2K17"s soundtrack was curated by Grimes, Imagine Dragons, and Noah Shebib, and features 50 licensed songs.[31] A companion app, titled MyNBA2K17, for iOS and Android is available alongside the game; it features Karl-Anthony Towns as its cover athlete.[32] Additionally, a free title for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live called The Prelude is also available; in it, the player can create their MyPlayer for use in the main game"s MyCareer mode.[16] On August 10, 2016, a trailer showcasing both the 1992 and 2016 United States men"s Olympic basketball teams was revealed.[33] The teams were first announced in July 2016.[12] NBA 2K17 was featured at Gamescom 2016.[7] Another trailer was released on August 22, 2016.[34] A trailer focusing on the game"s MyCareer mode was released on September 7, 2016.[35] On September 14, 2016, the final trailer before the game"s release date was released.Once you create your NBA prospect in "The Prelude," you can choose to join the basketball program of one of 10 licensed Division I NCAA squads. The trailer shows the logos of the Arizona Wildcats, Georgetown Hoyas, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Kansas Jayhawks, Illinois Fighting Illini, Louisville Cardinals, Michigan State Spartans, Oklahoma Sooners, UConn Huskies and Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

A 2K Sports representative confirmed to Polygon that the mode will let you play for any of those teams; NBA 2K16’s MyCareer featured 10 schools as well, but the Wisconsin Badgers appeared only as an opponent. Once NBA 2K17 goes live Sept. 16, players will be able to buy all-time great teams for each of the 10 schools with microtransactions, as well as collegiate MyTeam cards for legendary players.

Playing through multiple college games will affect your projected status in the NBA Draft. And if you need some tips, "The Prelude" will include 2KU, a new tutorial mode narrated by 2016 USA Basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Coach K will explain basketball fundamentals such as defensive positioning and the pick and roll, so you’ll learn how to play not just NBA 2K17, but the sport itself.
